How can I test a transmission out of the car??

I know these things get damaged in shipping all the time. I got one in the mail yesterday and the box was destroyed. I dont want to spend the time and effort...or money to put this thing only to find out it's locked in reverse or some shit.

    Thanks,

turn the input shaft and shift it?

Can't really test syncro's or anything unless you can simulate a load on it though.

Is it really that easy? How do people still end up with jacked up trannies in their car? Maybe blunt will chime in. I know he has had tranny problems.

Shift it through the gears like criv said, I always do that and I put the trans in each gear and test the play between the input and output shaft.

        Keep it slideways!!

Transmission getting tossed in a box? Just seems over kill for a box. Was it just a cardboard box?

Yeah it was just a cardboard box. It was wrapped up in bubble wrap but not enough to make me feel great about it.

              Thanks,

Find a transmision shop that has a trans dyno.

                ha! that's funny..

I got a diff like that once

stinky fluid which had leaked out to the cardboard, bent breather tube, and open when advertised as limited slip..

Dude refunded me though.. that was cool.

It's always good to test it anyway regardless of how well it was wrapped and shipped.
