    mind of its own, help

started my 84 318i today and it was idling really fast and erratic. I hit the accelerator and the idle kicked down and was nice and smooth. After about 5 minutes it jumped back into high idle and was rough as hell, entire car was shaking. I had to get the car into the garage so i put it in drive and even with the brakes fully applied it was spinning the tires and wanting to jump forward. Almost like doing a brake stand. I have no clue here. It freaked me out that even with the brakes on, the tires were spinning. I was on gravel but still, it shouldn't be happening. any clues here guys?

Wow. Turn VTEC off. Vacuum leak maybe? My sad little two cents.

a little new to this, what is vtec? Its weird this just started tonight, all i did was change spark plugs. i start the car about twice a week and last week the idle was rough but nothing major, this was just nuts.

I had a similar problem on my 318 once. What's the idle at? And does it sound like it is hitting a rev-limiter?

Mine bounced at 2200 rpms. I replaced the idle control unit (ICU) with two others, and a brand new idle control valve (ICV) before it worked. It took a few tries and various combinations of the three ICU's and two ICV's before I found one that worked.

In the meantime, put a hoseclamp on the hose coming out of the ICV to bring it down to a normal speed.

Also, check your rear brakes. You should be able to stop the wheels from spinning.
