why does my steering wheel shake like crazy at 50mph

the steering wheel starts shaking at 40 and gets worse at around 50 and gets less shaky at 60 and more

it might be the tires need balancing, but even when I get almost new tires and wheels it has gotten even worse

what should I do, first maybe get alignment and balancing

than what are my options, do the bushings and control arms need to be replaces


btw the car is finished, paint and everything is set nicely :drink:

2 of the 3 E30's I've owned would shake between 50-60mph. Even with fresh parts. Problem has always gone away after balancing the wheels...and eventually comes back. They go out of balance more often with aggressive driving.

usually the shaking in the steering wheel comes from unbalanced wheels. If it gets worse when you brake, it could be a caliper or a tierodend or suspension pieces.
the easist place to start is to have your 2 front wheels balanced first. maybe you have a bent rim too.

I have a similar problem, though prehaps not as bad as yours. It happens at 60 and tapers off at 70. Not under breaking, just on the highway. I am replacing the control arms, tierods, and bushings and think that will fix it. Those parts should probably have worn out by now and should be replaced. The E39 5 series has a similar problem with their control arms.
