What do you guys think of this 87 325i vert?

I'm going to email my dad today asking for his blessing basically on buying this (he was my previous employer, pays for rent and tuition for college. I want his OK) as a project car. It may be a doozy though.

There are some things that I think may be too much work for a newbie to e30's (though Ive been reading bimmerforums a TON the past 3-4 months) and general car mechanics. But the more I read these forums the more willing I am to get in to this. E30s seem really accessible.

It seems like a fun project car, but Im taking as much input as possible.

$2000 is way too much, like suggested over at bimmerforums, Im offering really low and not crossing $1500.

Oh yeah, I posted this on the bimmerforums as well. I know these forums overlap users, so I apologize to those that are gonna see this twice.

Any input is very much appreciated.

The cabbies have a few points which always suck up way too much money:
    1. the top or the rear window, if either are bad you are looking at 400-1200$ repair that you can't DIY.
    2. the rear seat splits: probably a good 100-200 to get fixed at an upolstery shop.
    3. they all fucking leak, with this in mind, it's a very very good idea to pull out the plastic guards on the inside of the car and pull the carpet up a little bit. if there is any rust RUNNNNNNNNNNNNN.

Best of luck. If i where you i'd get a coupe.

yea...get a coupe...and preferably a car that came from the factory with a 5spd...most of those conversions i see are messed up...and for that price you should be able to find a cood 5spd coupe

On top of all the regular BS that you'll get with a cabrio, that's not a Texas plate captain... so with that guy owning it for more than 30/60 days without registering the car in Texas you'll be stuck with penalty fees on top of the regular 6.25% sales tax to register it. Also looks like there is no inspection sticker on the car either, and that's probably because it won't pass which is why he is selling it.

Just a few words of advise, as the e30 that I have I picked up in February because the guy couldn't get it to pass inpection and sold it to me on the cheap. If it is cheap comparable to other cars you'll prob have to put this difference into the car to get it operable and safe.

I honestly didn't think of penalties being added for the plates being incorrect. I got shots of the interior. They are the crimson color and very faded and VERY worn. Like "cat with 6" blades for claws doing its work on the seats" worn.

It's just too much money for all the work. I dont think I'd buy it for over $1000 at this point.

Im just gonna keep shopping and probably stick with coupes.

I'm not saying there are penalties for out of state tags, what I'm saying is that he prob never registered it in Texas (i.e. no Registration Sticker, and no Texas plate) and you'll have to go through the process of doing that yourself. Out of state registrations are just a tad different than if you were just switching the owner on a Texas registered vehicle.
