Leaking Steering Rack - best option?

My Steering Rack is starting to leak.

I don't have the time or the tools to rebuild mine.

Should I buy a rebuilt for $300.00+, or should I go cheap and buy a used one for $100.00 that has a 6 month warranty?

Also, what would a shop charge to R&R the old rack?

I can do most of my own work, but this is something that I probably don't have the tools for, and don't want to screw up or break something in the process trying to do the job without the right tools.

On a scale of 1-10, 1 being the easiest, what level is this on the DIY scale, and do I need any special tools to R&R the rack?

Also, if I were to go with a Z3 rack, which one is quicker?
I believe there are two different types and one has less rotations lock-to-lock than another.

If I can get one for a good price, I'll go with the upgrade.

    Thanks.

Just buy a good used rack off the forum. Stick with stock, you've got no reason to throw some super quick rack in your stock cabrio.

R&R is about 1 hour if you know what you are doing, plus alignment. A shop will charge you alot more than that though. No special tools needed except an alignment.

I can get a used rack for a little over $100.00 used, with a 6 month warranty.

I'll check my Bentley as far as what is involved in the R&R process, but was wondering if anyone could tell me if I need any special tools to remove the Steering coupler joint or anything else.

When I compress the rubber boot by hand, fluid leaks out.

Maybe I'll try some of that stop leak stuff first.

        No.

When you get a rack, examine the steering shaft splines carefully to make sure none are damaged.

Before trying to remove the banjo bolts, slide the rack towards the pass. side so you can get in there with a socket. You'll need a 23/19 IIRC.

        It's really easy, just stinky/messy.

Unfortunately, the Bentley really doesn't cover the R&R of the rack, so I'll have to find a write-up online.

Update: I siphoned out the PS reservoir about 5 days ago, filled it with Lucas PS stop leak and I haven't lost a drop since.
