E30 Drifting Questions...

Alright, well I bought an E30 a couple of weeks ago, no wheels, clutch problems etc etc. I bought it mainly for the purpose to drift it. It's a 3.25i LSD, 4 door that I picked up for $350 from a friend. The title is still getting straightened out because the 4 people who bought it before me kept signing over the same title without turning it into the DMV. Well with this being said, I was debating if I was going to go all track or street legal with some track use.

Well here's my question and I know a couple of you drift already. What mods do you have for power, what wheel size do you have, and is it worth it?

Many of my friends drift on the track, and I've always wanted to go watch. When I went on Sunday to watch it seemed like everyone there (S14, S13, AE86, Miatas, Supras were the main bunch of cars) had a lot of power to throw down on the track.

Should I just do a S50 swap? Or should I just modify this car?

Thanks for looking.
I got a fender roller now! LMK if you need me to roll your fenders or want to rent the tool from me locally.

So you have actually never "drifted" on a track?

You should run sportmax wheels. Very unique. Also chuck in an m10 with an early 1600 crank to make 1.6L. Convert your brakes to rear drums and solid front rotors. Ditch all that EFI garbage and run a single barrel solex carb. Slam it on some ballin tokiko shocks and sprangs. I'm also running a 2.9 LSD. when I have the carb setup right I can run low 13s.

This is what I did - and it's very trackable.

I forgot to mention - run a compression check on your current motor. If your rings are really worn and you have low compression it would be perfect for a turbo. You don't have to go all out like I did.

Nope, never really got into the scene. I have a FWD car and an E34, and now an E30 (that doesn't run)

Now how would this be perfect for a turbo?

I'd like to help, but this is just too vague. I'd cover hours worth of text talking about drifting. So I'll keep it basic:

Keep the motor stock. A M20 is plenty to have fun! Focus on suspension. With $2k in mods you can have an e30 drift car that's awsome fun.

Wow, you've been the most helpful. I wasn't sure if the m20 motor was strong enough. I am thinking of running some lowtech springs and shocks...

For psloan - i'm sorry i am not as smart as you for e30s... you are a true god when it comes to being a jerk.

Hey! I live in reston and drift my E30! We should be friends. Lol. I run drift events in our area too. I can show you my setup if you want.

My generic advice is to leave the motor stock but just get it running well. The car is already light and higher torque than a stock S13 and much more than an rolla. Lighten the car and do suspension work. IMO stock seats suck for drifting unless you have sport seats.

If you want a 4.10 LSD, I can sell it to you. I also have a sport chip that might work in your car but im not 100% on that.

Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!
