    Ripoff or no?

2001 Volvo S40 needs the following:

    Radiator
    Rear wheel bearing
    Oil Change

This repair is quoted at $1131, im wondering if this is about normal, or a little high. This is for my gf, and she has had nothing but problems with this car. It amazes me because I was always led to believe that Volvos were reliable.

Is it being repaired at a dealership? I have a S60 2.4t that just had the front drivers side strut tower replaced, and front end aligned at the stealership and it was like $400, so $1131 dosn't sound too far off for that work. I have had the S60 for 3 years now with almost no trouble (the strut tower damage was from a burnout gone bad...) in reguards to reliability. Good luck.

IMHO I say it is a ripoff

Oil change is like 40 at the most
Wheel Bearing's are like 350 with the part a the most
and a radiator would be like 150-300

I would think 700 would be the most i would spend. My parents both have volvos and so does my sister. They always need work and I am getting pretty familier about the repairs (not by choice of course). For my e30 an Oil change is 13.88(self), and wheel bearing 210(shop), and radiator 250(shop). But I do all my own repairs.
Is that at a shop or what?

Not at the stealer, she took it to Tuffy (dont ask why, I have no clue).

Basically the thing overheated, she had AAA tow it there, then the guys there told her she needed a new radiator and it was going to be $780. She then told them about the sound in the rear which is a wheel bearing issue, and she gave them the go ahead to fix that, which brought it to $1131.

Sounds like it's a mute point now if she already gave the go ahead...

The S40 is based off of a shared platform from ford/mazda if i am not mistaken. Thsi would be why it is in need of constant repair

$780 for a radiator install sounds like a huge markup for the part and probably a fair price for the labor (an hour to an hour and half?). I'd try to at least source a new radiator and do that part myself. Rear wheel bearings might be enough of a bitch to leave it to a shop though...

After Ford made the purchase of Volvo, they've been total shit. Heard nothing but bad from friends that ahve worked at the Volvo stealer. My mom has a '94 840 Turbo and her and I both dog the nuts out of it. It wont die and it still chirps 2nd on an auto trans and makes good boost

Why in the hell would an 01 need a new radiator?

yeah, i think she got ripped.

apparently it was towed last night, quoted this morning, and now its done and shes driving it.

How can Tuffy source a radiator and wheel bearing in half a day, and install it all so that shes on the road by 5:00? I smell big ripoff, I demanded she get an invoice.

Sure why wouldn't they be able to? Worldpac exists there right?

You don't really have a leg to stand on if she paid.
