    318is Exhaust Suggestions

Im sure this was covered previously on e30s, but from what I see not here yet.

Right now I got a Single Round tip Supersprint cat back exhaust on the car. Great fit and super quality is obviously the norm. I am pleased with the performance it provides.

    But...

    Its not loud enough.

The other day a friend came over to my place with his supercharged 1.9L Z3 to do some basic upgrade work - shock mounts and a hidden hitch. I used to have a highly modded 1.9L z3 and Ed has bought a lot of my parts that I took of when I de-moded the car - modified airbox, supersprint exhaust, hitch.

So he has my old exhaust on his M44 Z3 and man does it sound different than the SS on my m42. Much louder (2x as loud) and throatier. When I test drove his car before and after the mods I again fell in love with how my old Z3 sounded with that single oval tip supersprint.

Im sure that if I sold my SS exhaust I could easily get a custom, car back exhaust system fabricated. The tubing seems straight forward - 2.5" ID right?. What are the recomendations for the muffler itself. Should I go to the local domestic / import speed shop and get a folgers type exhaust or go some other route.

    Any suggestions welcome.

I say run a striaght 2.5ID tube to a glasspack exiting out the back.

dynomax or magnaflow both have a variety of sizes/types of mufflers that are 2.5" straight through. all are under $75 i'd say. Just pick on with the sizing, material (stainless or not basically) and have a muffler shop do the piping. Smaller mufflers=louder, so if you want louder, get a smaller muffler (obviously)

Smokestacks up the front fenders. With flaps on top.

          Go with Rob's advice.

DId you buy your SS system new? Cause you havent had your car for that long have you? I hear that sometimes mufflers take a little while to get broken in and get louder as they do...

I know what you mean. It takes about 3000 miles of daily driving to break in a supersprint. Im at about 2500 miles since install last May. Of those 2500 miles, about 600 are track miles, so Im more or less there and feel its still a bit too quiet than what Im used to.

That reminds me, have you considered a test pipe replacing your cat? Illegal of course, but it should increase the sound level a bit and pick up some HP at the same time, drop weight as well.

e9nine- went to the local Midas here in Flemington and asked if they do custom exhaust work. They certainly do and they will also do catalytic converters :D
Now Ive got to get a muffler.

Anyone want to buy a 5 month old SuperSprint exhaust for a 318is?

You have a muffler shop saying that they will remove your cat and replace it with a straight pipe? Wow, thats interesting... considering that tampering with cats is a violation of federal law.

Not a straight pipe, but a catco cat.
