84 eta question

my friends workin up to restore his 84 325e and i told him about the tms chip. but i read on strictlyeta.net that the 84s had a non-detachable chip, and also on tms it says 85-88. i couldve sworn ive seen 84's with chips here. do you have to switch the ecu to a 85-88 eta?
