    1982 Benz diesel

I've been keeping half an eye open lately for an inexpensive beater DD. I found a 1982 MB 240d for sale. 102k miles, everything works (even the A/C), $3500. My budget was $9k so I could just write this guy a check.

I know a jap car would be a wiser choice considering that fuel efficiency is important now. This would be kinda cool though. What sort of mileage do you think I could expect from an old diesel. I know Mercedes diesels are stout and reliable, I'm not worried about the engine, but the car is 25 years old.

    Would you?

3500 sounds really high but those old benz deisels scream "save the planet" more than 10 hybrids so people around here are shooting each other to buy them and run them on old vegetable oil. My hippie black-sheep brother has only owned benz deisels for the past ten years and loves them. 100k is nothing and the gas milage is pretty good. Just remember its going to drive like an electric locomotive, they are good cars.

What he said, if you can find a restaurant that will give you veggie oil, your fuel is then free making it an even better dd. Depending on where your at too, you might be able find a school researching bio-diesels (I know a lot schools in the midwest are researching this), free fuel on a car that runs on anything is big plus in my books. Besides being a diesel and bulletproof, you dont have to worry about someone dinging your e30, after all its just a 25 year old mercedes.
