    good at what $?

    e28 m5 1988:
Stock. Rare (less than 2,000 imported). Same owner since 1988. Good condition. Strong car. Very fast. Schwartz Black w/tan hides. 230K miles. M-1 racing engine (hand built, 4 valves/cylinder, naturally aspirated, every cylinder separately fuel injected, orginal headers.) 5 speed Getrag transmission with short throw. BBS wheels & good rubber. Bilstein shocks. New battery. Probably only M5 in US with original break-in stick in front window. All service done by Baron BMW.

    Pics look good,paint etc.

What would you pay for a good deal?

Entirely based on compression. With that mileage, if compression is great and cosmetic condition is good, maybe 8k.

To contrast, I sold an E28 M5 that was cosmetically challenged with ok compression at 199k miles and I was happy to get 4k.

That car would fetch $20k+ here, very easily.

It doesn't have the "M1 racing engine." There are three versions of the M88 engine (the engine in the M1, M5, M635.) The M88/1 and M88/2 were racing motors, while the M88/3 was detuned for street use. The M1 race cars used the M88/1 and the M88/2 for higher horsepower classes. The M88/3 is what is in the M5, it's the same motor that is in my fathers M635CSI. It's very fast, and feels very raw, but it's still a lot less than the motors in the race cars. M88/3's still came with ITB's, that fuel injection you're talking about (starts with a K, forgot the rest,) 4 valves, spaghetti headers, all that. My fathers car has a VERY short throw, I don't know if it's a kit or factory. I honestly don't like it very much because it wont allow me to shift as fast as I want due to how notchy it is. Buy it if you like it.

                    E28 M5 had the S38...

Very similar to the M88/3, but also very different.

for what price? sounds like a $7-$13k car to me...

doubt it is the only M5 with a break in sticker. (though it is probably the only 200k+ car with the break in sticker lol)

My mistake guys, seen only one in person, it had the European M88 in it. I wasn't aware the American M5's had the S38.
