    Alright... PAINTS TIME

So I'm thinking about painting my car myself.

4-Door 325i, used to be Delphin Metallic, but we all know how those original paints held up....

Anyways, I'm looking for recommendations for a color scheme and also how to paint it.

I searched and found a couple ways to paint it but no one really had a good write up for all the steps and whatnot.

I'm looking to probably do something a little unique like that cool Laguna Seca Blue/Black project SA e30 is doing, so if anyone could help me out with some ideas/techniques/anything else that'd be great.

autobodystore.com has a good forum to ask more specific questions like how to prep and what you need to do a DIY paint job.

good luck guys, it's not as easy as you may think. I have a delphin grey coming down in a couple of weeks to get a full respray, if you can hold off until then i was gonna do a full DIY.

Sounds good, are you repainting it Delphin? I'd really like to repaint mine the stock color but I can't find the paint or figure out how to do it.

I assume from your SN that ur e30 is delphingrey mettalic? then your paint code should be 184. go to any online paint shop, or better yet a body shop and have them mix it up for you. The paint has to be mixed, it's not something you can run to NAPA and pick up. And be prepared, it is expensive.

And yes, the e30 coming down is getting a new coat of delphin.

Holy crap paint supplies have got expensive is right! I plan on re-shooting my Cab before the end of winter. I'm going to spay it Centari, Alpine White 2. I used to paint, but its been awhile since I bought supplies. Urethane primer with the catalyst $100, gallon of Alpine White Centari $120, hardener for the Centari $65, reducer for the paint $35 a gallon.Add in some filler, putty, sandpaper, good tape and masking paper and its close to 5 bills in materials for a small car. I was going to clear it too, but the budget may not allow for it.

I didn't know they still even made centari. i though that went away in the 90's.

to be honest the paint that was originally used was glasurit i think. it is an excellent paint. if you care for your metallics and the clear coat it will last. clear coat 2 stage paints were kind of a new thing to car companies back then as a std offered paint, not something special. the clears weren't the greatest, but they are better now. the only paint going bad on my granitsilber car is where the car was repaired by one of the p/o where a quarter panel was put on then it was blended. they used cheap paint and it crapped out. the rest of the factory paint is fine.

Yes Dupont still offers Centari, I'm most comfortable with that as I know how to get it on wet, real wet just before it runs...thats the key to a great shoot IMO

Unless you are spraying 90 coats of paint on, you do not need a gallon to paint your car. I did a '34 RR Phantom II with PPG 9300 (Black) and it took about 3 quarts with a couple of re-sprays on the fenders and doors. Many times the surface area of an e30.
