My mother is thinking of getting a new car. She has an exploder right now and its seen better days.

Anyways, I recommended an a4 quattro of some flavor for her to get. Well, she really wants one now. We went to the dealer and I test drove an 08 2.0t a4 quattro, it was an auto. Which presents me to one of my questions! When the car is in drive, and you stop at a light, holding the brake on obviously, the car shakes and shudders. I swear like every auto I have driven does this. Is there anything you can do about it? I always just assumed it was the tranny mounts or something, but this car had less than 1k on it and it did it.

So then she found an 06 a4 2.0t quattro thats pre-certified. And she is thinking about pulling the trigger on that. The only thing I can find "wrong" with the car is it does the same shudder deal. I told the guy about it and he talked to a tech and they told me is because "its a 4cyl with a turbo so it rumbles a lot." Which doesn't really seem like a real answer. Because I know when you take any auto that does that and throw it in neutral it goes away.

So #1, does anyone know why autos do that? And should I care?
#2, does anyone know anything about the new a4s? Or have a list of the scheduled maintenance? I couldn't find it anywhere, I would guess the dealer should have it.

And #3, has anyone had any experience with pre-certified cars? Is it worth it? As it sits now, its about 2 grand more for a pre certified one, which this car would have a 4 year / 100,000 mile warranty (its got 22k now).

Well if it's what I'm thinking of, no car should be doing that. The only time any of my cars has done that was when it was a little flooded from driving through a foot of water at high speed. It's probably something more with the engine than the transmission, because my e30's a manual but it has 207k miles on it and it shudders sometimes. I used some seafoam on it and it shudders a little bit less than it used to.

Don't buy an Audi. It will be in the shop with electrical problems more than it is on the road. Look for something else. Ask WillisE30, he works on them every day.

#1... autotragic cars do that because the car is still in gear. you foot holding onto the brake is dragging the engine down and trying to stall it. Its the same is if you are slowly cruising in 1st in a manual car without your foot on the gas and then try to hit the brake without dissengaging the clutch.

An automatic car has a torque converter instead of a clutch. to get a mental picture of what is goin on think of 2 propellors really close together with a really thick oil between them. when one prop moves the oil drags the other with it. this relative motion between them alolws for slippage like you would slip a clutch(its slipping when you are stopped when you are on the brake) but gives you full drive when you are cruising.

#3 I have had 2 certified preowned cars... '03 discoveryII and '07 RangeRover Sport HSE. Both were a lot less problem prone than the '01 Wrangler 60th ltd. ed.(the only other "newer" car I have owned). That may have something to do with the company of make. However I believe it has also to do with the warrenty you get with a certified car. Its always nice to know if something retarded and expensive shits the bed you dont have to pay for it. And the company knowing that it has to shell out money to pay for the lemon they sold you, you would think, nets you a nice car. THat extra 2k if just you paying for the extended warrenty basically

I had a 98 Audi A4 Q w/ 150K miles on it and didn't have any electrical problems with it. Maybe I got lucky. I actually would love to go back to my Audi but other things, like clutches are a ton of money if you don't feel comfortable working on AWD which I didn't.

I have never had an Auto do that. If its happening on all the auto's you have driven, its you. Put your foot on the brake alittle more firm.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy an audi again if you have enough money to keep it going but yea, its going to cost more to keep it up then an e30

My mechanic jokes that the four rings in Audis emblem stand for the four puddles of fluids that will be under your car after you park it. I'm not particularly impressed with Audi a4's. Two of my friends own 1.8t's with manuals and both have intermittent electrical problems. both are bone stock and are driven lightly.

I would suggest looking at e46 Xi's. Or even an e90/e60.

x50hundred million. I worked at a euro car dealership for years, if it's not an electrical problem, it's gonna be an issue with one or more of the 8 ball joints in the front suspension. The whole 8 ball joint thing should tell you a lot ababout how the car is engineered in general. It got to a point where we wouldn't even sell V.A.G. cars anymore because of all the warrenty work.

This is the second thread telling someone how buying an Audi is like investing in Enron. I can only feel so sorry for prople paying $1500.00+ for replacing the timing belt and having to have 50%+ of the front of the vehicle removed. Special fender alignment keeper tools to keep shit straight? Not a car I would buy.

I highly recommend against Audi's, my brother has a manual TT225, it spends 20% or more of it's overall life in company.

We've had it for 1 year, it's fried 2 clutches, gone through an engine mount, and has had countless electrical/boost control problems. That N75 valve has got to go....

Don't. Do. It. Get a Merc touring, or a 5 series touring. The ONLY Audi I know of that doesn't crap out much is the slightly older 2.7 ALLROAD.
