do you have a limp tip?

if only i'd had my camera...this would be alot funnier...

    nevertheless...

pulling out of the gas islands at the local Costco last week
after pumping some $1.92 premium (the highlight of my day!),
i'm cruising down one of the lanes in the parking lot and i spy
    an e39 a few cars down...as a pass, i give it a quick glance
    over...very clean white sedan...obviously a sport package
    with the 17" riveted basketweaves...suddenly...without
warning, i'm slamming on the brakes not believing what i have
just seen...protruding from underneath the rear apron is a
stainless steel exhaust with DTM tips--installed upside down...
"limp tips", if you will, pointing toward the ground like some
cheap rusted out exhaust on a Ford Escort...

i have driven by no fewer than 3 times in the last few days
hoping to catch another glimpse of that horrifying sight--with
    camera in hand...

i told you it would be funnier if i had a pic...

Hahaha, it needs Viagra. That's damn funny. E39 bumpers don't have much room for tips I know, I guess the poor sap was forced to do it if he wasn't down for bumper cutting.

think i would have spared myself the inevitable ridicule
and opted for the straight tips...

I sure opened THIS forum expecting something different.

lol, guess my mind was in the gutter.

The reason for limp tips is you get less noise in the cabin but same performance. They also allow water to drain out of the end can easier. They make sense, pointed up he probably makes too much noise at the track and down cuts the dB level by 20 right of the top.

More common in Europe where noise laws are tested when you go in for inspection.

Not everyone loves an obnoxious exhaust note in the cabin but you still get the same note outside only muted. Then again it could be performance before asthetics.

VW does this all the time with their new models.

not to mention the stock exhausts on e39s are 'turn downs' as well, just tucked up under the bumper

incorrect. all 5 series have straight tips...my e34 has dual straight tips
and my e39 sport wagon had an oval straight tip...
