Electrical Question: Need A Check Engine Light...

So in order to pass CA smog with my S50 E30, I need a check engine light.

The car has an aftermarket VDO gauge setup in a BMP Design carbon fiber gauge cluster.

The factory cluster connectors (yellow, blue, white) are still in place.

I need to figure out where to pin into those connectors for the CEL signal.

The plan is to pin into the proper connector and put a small red LED on the cluster with a "CHECK" label next to it. Hopefully this will satisfy the BAR referee.

Can anyone shed some light on this one?

IIRC as long as it has it's "Self Check" still working, the will let it fly. Yod do still have an Odometer, right? I think mileage recording plays a factor though. I'm not 100% on the second part, just remember something like that in the V.C.

The "self check" is not present as the cluster has been changed.

The BAR referee is not just a normal smog tech, he will visually and manually inspect for a properly connected CHECK ENGINE light such as that found along the lower left side of the E30 instrument cluster.

The factory CEL is simply an added bulb socket on the rear of the cluster, so technically once you dig up the correct pin on the X20 connector (Pin 8, Gray Wire), all you need to do is find a 12v bulb, and connect the other side to a +12V source (the ECU grounds out the circuit, flipping the light on)

Sorry, you'll have to help me out -- X20 connector?

Yeah, the light is just a bulb, the DME will run the self check to light the bulb. Self Check lets the smog guy know you didn't take out the bulb to pass.

The BAR referee said I need a labeled red lamp wired into the CEL circuit.

It has been inspected once, and I am now working to resolve the issues the BAR referee pointed out.

X20 is the factory E36 engine connector, similar to the c101 connector on our e30's. Did you do any wiring or did you use that lame treehouse crap?
