The economic forecasters working for bmw projected the current fuel pricing trends and decided that it was the only responsible choice to make. This is in addition to them wanting to compete with hondas ten years after production.

A short crankshaft is way stiffer than a longer one. A 4 cylinder engine is also more compact and therefore offers better weight distribution. Look at the M3's exceptional handling. Most of it comes from the motor location. In ATCC, the 300HP M3 would beat 500HP Holden Commodores and Ford RS 500.

The engine that propelled Nelson Picket to the 1983 F1 championship was... a four cylinder, proving my three previous points. The BTCC 2 liter S14 was good for 280hp and the DTM 2.5 was limited to 320hp and 9300 RPM.

The power delivery of a tuned 4 cylinder engines is incredible.

Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

to all, i honestly didn't know why the e30 m3 came with a 4cly engine, i am not in to 4clys engines i am in to v8s and the e30 6 liner, when i saw an e30 m3 picture i saw the engine and notice it had a 4 cly engine and since i have an e30 it came to my attention which is why i asked.

if i have by any chance hurt anyones feeling by asking this "silly" question i am sorry.

it's a lot easier to tune the exhaust pulses generated by a four cylinder than those of an inline six.
Not that I care, of course.

4 Cylinders are also much much lighter than v8s.
