    Transmission Suggestions

I have a bad 3rd gear syncro on my Metric Mechanic Ultimate Transmission. The failing syncro came with the car. The PO seems to have pushed the car quite a bit. I love the way the transmission is now. It has a real tight and short throw to it and the gears are super close.

I have been thinking about what I should do:
Buy a new metric mechanic transmission ($1200)?
Have my current transmission rebuilt and hope to never have problems again($300+)?
Get a rebuilt stock tranny ($200+)?
Or get another aftermarket higher performance transsmisson?

The Metric Mechanic transmission that I have in my car now is real hard to down shift with. You really have to let the RPM's drop a lot to downshift without dropping the transmission. I don't know if a new Metric Mechanic transmission would be the same way.

Can you guys please offer me some advice?

I would be happier with something that didn't have such a huge gate. Anyone have any suggestions?

Your tight short shifts are from the knob, not the transmission. First, try refilling it with high quality trans fluid. You could also double clutch when using 3rd. If you can't live with that, buy a used box. It's not feasible to get them rebuilt in my opinion.

I agree with Chris, go with a low-mileage Getrag 260 (325). The gear setup is great for any kind of driving, they're strong as hell and can handle tons of power. Used, low mileage 'boxes can he had for 250-400. Go with Redline MTL for lube.

It would seem that if third gear is hard to engage that Metric Mechanic, in fact, does not manke a quality transmission, or at least that at least yours isn't. I wouldn't give them a dime, and go for a used box. The box might have been dropped or the car might have been wrecked at some point, which can shock-load the intput/output shafts and wreck gear selection. I ran into a similar problem with my ZF 310 M3 gearbox, which unfortunately cmae out of a wrecked car :( Enjoy.
