    Painting a bronzit

I'm just about to buy this Bronzit/Champagne 89' coupe and the paint is bad, chipped and faded. The car is really cheap so I could afford a paint job, my question is....

Would it be smart to paint it a color other than champagne(probably black)? I'm worried about left over paint being showing in places like under the hood, under the gas cap, and other spots...

Ive never had a car painted so I am also wondering how much a decent paint job usually runs...

    The car :)

    Thanks for any advice

I have just got some quotes on mine being painted and have had prices from $1500-$5000 and that is with very little body work (few minor door dings) and staying the same color(black). I would think that a color change will obviously cost more depending on how far you go with the color change. But I honestly (even though it is bronzit) would keep it the oem color just to be easy on the pocket or pass until you find one in a color you would rather have.

respray the bronzit, that way you wont have to do the door jambs an around the hood a trunk.

I just resprayed mine glass out full strip, an the finish materials were 735 bucks for PPG Base clear, and I had 600 in stripping it, primers and other meterials. I did most all of the work myself other that the final spray which I had a good friend who has been painting for 25 years do. I had quotes to just tape an shoot with me bringing my own materials form 900-3400 no body work just tape wipe squirt.

A good job that you dont have to do anything but drop off an pick up is going to be 3000 and up. If you get the bulk of the prep done, and cheap out a bit on the brand of finish materials you should be able to get it down to the 1k range.

Check out my project thread. I paid $1400 with body work, shaving, frame straighting, and new windshield. Its not factory perfect but alot better then alot of paint jobs i've seen costing much more. I'm sure you could have your car trailored in pre stripped and have all the jambs, trunk, engine bay etc painted for less. If you bring it to them ready to shoot i'm sure they would do it for less then a grand including materials.

How bad is it? I have a few rust spots im taking care of this summer. I bought paint the other day. 1/2 Pint of Bronzit [PPG] and all the necessary reducers, clears, etc. cost $170.

That wont cover that much either but its an option

Paint it Bronzite.. If your having a shop do all the work, a factory job will cost around $8-10k (for getting all the jams, engine bay, trunk, etc.). If anyone says that they can do it for under that, they are lying...

If you don't mind having some random spots of Bronzite on the car or you are willing to strip the car to a uni-body and give it to the paint shop like that, then you're looking at a $1,500 - $3k job with you doing all the labor.

I've had 3 cars painted and been around the block... It's best to keep the paint the way it came from the factory (even then, it's hard to get shops to do a decent work even if you do the labor).
