    m52+(small case diff)=

This past weekend I was in Lynchburg which is right at the foot of the blue ridge mountains so I thought I would go for little drive easter morning and take advantage of the good roads. Living in downtown Richmond it is hard to get away with anything so I thought I'd let my car unwind so when I pulled out of my families neighborhood I relined it in first dropped it into second and BANG. Sounded like a shotgun going off, and no powa to the wheels at all. Now you can put the car in gear let off the clutch and it just ideals as if nothing were wrong no noise or anything although if you crawl under it the driveshaft is spinning.

So after about three hours of waiting I was able to enjoy a Sunday ride through the mountain in a tow truck with this guy.

The picture isnt working for me, but man that sucks.

What kind of diff are you replacing it with?

Sorry to hear about that. I don't blame you though, it takes a VERY gentle driver to make a small-case diff hold up behind a 24v motor.

Where in Lynchburg were you when it happened? You're right, there are some good roads around there, especially north of town near Wintergreen.

I would like to find a large case LS high ratio diff but they are getting hard to come by. I am heading down to the BMWfarm with Ryan on Friday or Saturday to see if I can track one down.

Stu, the car is on Boonsboro road right now at MB Euro. I don't know if you still make to Lynchburg anymore but if you do you should stop by this weekend, my buddy nick is going to be installing his m52 at the same time I am swapping diffs.

my folks live in lynchburg and my e30 is there currently. It needed new shocks so i left it there. But ill be in the burg on friday. you should try going out towards Natural Bridge off of 130 in madison heights. Great roads and no cops!

Do you mean a medium case? Is high ratio 2.93 or 4.10?

small case from a 318is. medium case is only found on 6 cyl cars. High ration is 4.10, low ratio is 2.93.

                Thanks for clearing that up.
I guess I thought since you broke the small case diff, you might upgrade. I'm sure it's going to be hell to locate a 4.10 small case LSD.

                Good luck!

Have you considered a 3.73? That would be quite entertaining with a M52.

Yeah you should try the 3.73 with the m52. Not only will it be fun, they are a lot more common in the E30 community.
