How old are you? Depending on your age I'd recommend a street survival school for teens.

autox is the best way to learn to be smooth and fast. you will learn more car control on an autox course then a track. start there and youll realize you only thought you were a good driver. youll pick it up fast however

goddam we got some dicks on the page.
I want to learn how to control my car when it slides because going around corners at speed sometimes puts the car into a slide that I haven't been able to control too well in the past. I just want to know how to control it. I'm not talking about full on drifting. I would think that more people would understand why I'd want to learn how to control my slide...it is a rwd car.
And no, I don't want to kill anyone. I'm not planning on using the street as my own playground, but I want to know what the basics of driving are so that I can be a better driver on the road and when i get around to it, the track.
And i apologize for not knowing that autox was an option. Obviously, that's why I asked the question, eh? It'd be dumb for me to ask how much a dvd would cost, but say that I can't afford a similarly priced autox session, wouldn't it?
Seriously guys...thanks for the help:down:

Autocross is the best place to start out at. Excellent for learning car control, low speed enough that you're not going to screw anything up when you lose it. From there it's track days.
A good DVD I found is Skippy B's:
Any of the book by Ross Bentley are also excellent.

autox is like $25. if you're too poor for that... well, I can't help you.
HPDEs aren't that expensive either!
as far as drifting in a parking lot to "learn how to drive well" - do us all a favor and crash your car into a light pole ASAP.

Go to an autocross, it's 'cheaper' and you can still learn quite a bit.

You might want to grab one of these...
So you don't want to pay for a track school? And you want to do this on a public street? Ok. What is the worst that could happen you ask? You could kill yourself or someone else (/disclaimer)
I could give you advice on how to do that on the street - but it's not in mine or your best interest.
You might chuckle, but go-carts are a great way to learn to drive (not the mini-golf kind) They teach you about carrying speed through a corner, late breaking, apex-ing, ect. All the stuff that makes a good driver.

how do you plan to do that? without someone in the car with you to teach you what to expect etc? you gonna sit in front of the tv and pretend? lol, put your flame suit on.

Costco Parking Lot. Late night with no cars around. But you didn't hear that from me.

FOR THE PEOPLE THAT CAN'T STOP MAKING STUPID, CONTRIVED COMMENTS:
By DRIFT A LITTLE, i meant countersteer while sliding car a little because it seems INEVITABLE that a RWD car would slide.
