Aw what a great topic, used to manage a liquor store for 1yr and worked there for 3yrs before that, wine I know.
Cheap and good Bogle Peitie Syrah,
Chateau Ste. Michelle makes great wine (cab sauv especially)
Dry Creek VIneyards Clone Zin is great if you like your wine with some kick to it and some fruit.
Also Rosenblum makes good Zin,
Ravenswood used to rock and is now falling off its once high quality,
, Peachy Canyon is more fruity zin than others
I like a good pinot has plenty of fruit and the ladies will slurp it on down,
Adelsheim (OR), Wild Horse (clean pure pinot), King Estate (OR), La Crema (deep rich fruit), and another, Saintsbury (nice coffee hints to it)
As for the aussie wine mentioned above, ehh!, Yellow Tail sucks!, but Penfolds, and Rosemont are alright, but d'Arenberg and Cloudy Bay rock.
I'll shut up now.E30 325ix 62k

Depending upon what type of Italian food you are preparing, you might consider a Ruffino Chianti. It is a nice chianti, goes well with a range of Italian dishes, and is reasonably priced for the non-reserve (approx. $12 here in CA). If you can let us know what price range you are considering, I am sure we can offer additional suggestions. To some extent you get what you pay for (no one needs to bring up "Two Buck Chuck"). I agree, for the most part, with the price ranges mentioned above. I do take issue with those priced at or above $150 as being merely "overpriced". There are some wines such as Opus One, Caymus, higher end BV's, etc. that are well worth the price. Then again, you drink those wines for the experience rather than to wash down your petit filet.

20 bucks and under guys, and it has to be one you can get at a grocery store, not the ABC store...brother is 20, but strangely enough the DMV gave him a lisence saying its 21, imagine that ;)
as for the meal plan, i think im going to go with some manicotti or baked ziti...nothing TOO complex as im no iron chef...i'll probably accompany it with a salad and some garlic bread

Cakebread makes one of thier cheapest that is $26 in Kansas City.
If she isnt an experienced whino then stick to a Pinot Noir, its more versatile and a lot softer than my beloved Cabs. Its a great compromise when I want to split a bottle with a girl who doesnt drink wine (which is common on a college campus).
Merlots can be killers if you dont get a great one, can seem bitter.
You cant get wine at a grocery store here, at least not real ones. Just go to a liquor store, if you live in a nice hood there should be a good one nearby.
You guys are awful, $2 bottle of wine? MIght as well drink Bud Lite. Mgold, sell me your car.Im now E30less.
