    it is an s52.
that is the point. I have no intention of using the s54.
I was wondering if any one knows ghow the VANOS system is controled? Does it go on oil pressure alone> or does the DME have anything to do with it? If it is self controled by the oil pressure then I could use an aftermarket Fuel controler

does vanos have anything to do with oil pressure?

i dont think ive heard anything about fuel controllers interfering with vanos operation.

from what i've read the computer has plenty to do with it.

        from http://www.bmwworld.com/technology/vanos.htm

On most BMW engines that use a single VANOS, the timing of the intake cam is only changed at two distinct rpm points,
that'd be fine if you wanted to use one of those msd window switches or whatever, but-

while on the double-VANOS system, the timing of the intake and exhaust cams are continuously variable throughout the majority of the rpm range.
meaning, get an m50 if you want things simple.

the cam adjuster use oil pressure to advance the timing. The DME opens a solenoid that allows oil pressure to work the adjuster.

Could a FMU be used to activate that solenoid at a given rpm?
