is it possible to buy original california black license plates from the 63-69 (i think) cars and use them? i'd expect i'd have to pay a specialized fee, which i believe is $40 a year here, as long as the number is not in use or retired. thanks

Not legally. You could probably get it custom made and stick them on your front.

dont know about CA (the best way to find out is to call the dmv, not ask here), but in Oregon the car has to be age appropriate with the plate. Which pisses me off. I'm dying to get a set of "Pacific Wonderland" plates. That and in 6 years my e30 may qualify for special interest plates which have a lifetime registration. Now to get the bmwcca as a recognized collector group with the state. Curt has an old orange oregon plate, and is pretty retro cool too.

I want this plate, just new:

At least I'm not in Hawaii. I don't think I could drive around with a giant rainbow on the front of my car.

I've heard of people finding black plates in junkyards and then getting a personalized plate with the same number. That way they can run the black plate with a current sticker and not worry about it.
Don't do it though, because I'm going to and I don't even know why I told you about it.

I have thought about this for before and actually have a plan put together.
There is a site that sells european plates (www.licenseplates.tv) they also sell all kinds of US plates, new and old. You can order a dead ringer black California plate from them, you just can't have it shipped to a California address.
I want to get a Vintage 356 Porsche speedster replica and will put a black plate on it. Plan to just order custom white plate and at same time order black plate through this site and have it shipped to a friend in Chicago, he sends it to me. When DMV gets my white custom plate I go pick it up but put stickers on matching black replica.

thanks for your responses guys! i'll try calling the DMV, but i doubt they'd just say yes... in the 60's, california cars had black plates with yellow lettering. i've tinted my windows, smoked head and tail lights, and painted window trim. the only light things on my car are the kidneys and the license plate... well looks like i'm going to buy one, and hope the DMV says yes

In CA, you used to be able to put older plates on a newer car, but the car those plates were originally issued to had to be completely out of circulation (i.e. junked or never registered again). I don't know if this is still the case...
I know that I've seen several cars around town with plates way older than the car.Jason
