In California this is a common deal for the street rod guys. You can take an old plate and have it issued as a "personlized or special interest plate". As long as the number of the plate isn't being used and any black plates you find probably won't be. Duh! You will pay an extra fee each year and a one time fee. There are at least a couple of places that sell new replacement plates in the old colors. I have seen both the black / yellow and the blue / yellow plates with 7 characters. They only came with 6 characters so they were custom plates. I assume they were legal, but I'm not a lawyer.

I just did a little research and it looks like the custom replacement plates are now allowed 9 characters and spaces in California. I will check with the DMV next week, but if this is the new deal it's very cool. The first plate vendor I found online show the samples - http://www.cr8apl8.com/index.html

Maybe you can paint your plate black and yellow and not have a problem.

i have wanted a delaware plate for years, almost makes me want to move there just for the plate...

they are all black like stated with white letters, but the best thing is they are much smaller then a normal sized plate
