    M20 3.0l stroker kit....

Good morning, (well it is here)

Most e30's on this side have been that have had engine mods have gone for the 'eta' bottom end mated with 'i' head which gives 2.7 and a v-quick car if set up correctly.

I however want more, so was thinking about going for the stroker.

So my question is, who sells the 3ltr stroker kit for the M20?

And are there any hidden problems that need to be adressed prior to the swap?

And as I'm sure that someone will have done this already, is it a worthwhile mod to do?

    Cheers,
    Mark.

    Short answer: No.
More: It is not worth the $$$. More cost effective mods would be turbo/engine swap (S50).

Ted, who has a 3.0L himself will tell you that.
But he's a nut and loves his stroker. So do what makes you happy, if you dig the M20, you can stick with it.

But no, it is not worth it.

      Turbo....hmm sounds promising....

Do you have any info on this conversion?

Or know someone who has done this?

      Thanks,

There are several on this forum who have done a turbo conversion. Depending on your skills it can by far be the cheapest upgrade to get the kind of power increase we're talking about here. If your current engine (M20B25) is in good health (do a compression test) then I say go ahead. But be prepared.

3L - fun, torquey, looks stock, you get a brand new motor out of the deal

M/S50 conversion - more power, more upgradeable, modern engine, more cost-effective

Turbo - boost :D , power level depending on the size of your wallet (as with most things car related) iffy on reliability if you cut costs, can be done fairly cheap

That's my .02 I went with the 3L stroker before fully weighing my options.

              Have done and WOW!!

300rwbhp from a m20, i'm in shock! and more to come.

Although the $5000 price tag makes me think a m30 3.5l conversion may be a more sensible way to go.

So what are the most common mods done to the m20's in the states?

In the uk it's: eta bottom end, flowed/ported head, schrick cam (272/282), dbilias throttle bodies or MAF conversion, Unichip ecu and some have even installed NOS.

But the most power from an m20 I've seen is around 240 rwbhp, but that is NA though.

              Thanks,

If you're just looking for tons of power, then fit a turbo.

If you're looking for a powerful NA M20 then 3.0L stroker.

If you're looking for a very powerful NA engine then put whatever will fit.

I have the 3.0L stroker from Ireland Engineering and it is plenty of power with similar torque to an S50 (E36 M3 engine). A pal of mine has a 3.0L stroker and he is getting similar hp to an S50 and nearly as much torque. The 3.0L stroker route is costly, but you do get a completely rebuilt powerful M20 engine out of it, so no complaints or regrets here ;)

Edit: sry here's the link to IE.....

If you choose this route, your pound is high against the dollar ;)
