A member on Bimmerforums is offering VIN decodings to anyone and at no cost(something kinda rare these days). If you have an account on bimmerforums, you just post your VIN and he'll send you a PM in a few days. Info includes production date, packages that came with the car, original colors, etc... Very useful if you aren't the original owner!

The VINs are all German ;)
Seriously, the data is based only on the last 7 of the VIN, which is the unique ID for each car. The rest is just assembly line, model and production year ID.
Depending on what the guy's access is, it can work for any BMW. With VINs from US Spec cars the right database can tell you which dealership first sold the car.Jay
