I think that BMW is the best thing that could happen to me.

Does THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE say anything? Not only that getting an E30 gives you a immense amount of options to work on it. Come on what compact sports car could hold that beast. Never mind the expensive parts this car will be way worth your while just make sure you get one that one fail you as soon as you get it look around.

Also join BMW CCA ($25 a yr). THat'll put you in contact with a WHOLE LOT of enthusiasts and resources in case you have any trouble with your car. Thats whats cool about owning a bimmer. With all the enthusiasts, There's always someone willing to help you out.

I just met another club member yesterday willling to help me change the timing belt and water pump (Saved $600). I swear, you meet the nicest people in the club.

Thanks for the bout of confidence.

I agree that BMW owners seem to be an altogether good group.

All go back and read this later probably, because I am at work, and don't have the time. But I want to say: With a community largely made up of poor high school and college kids, the car cannot be that expensive to drive/own/maintain. If it were, we'd have to bail out, sell it, and drive a Honda. (or 2 crx's )

If you run into any problems, just find help here, and be willing to pick up a wrench, a can of seafoam, and a screwdriver.

          E30s are great cars.
GM's like cavalier, on the other hand.....gawd, are suxor. My family has owned GM cars, a lot of them, and they break down and things go wrong a lot more often than my BMW.

Actually, I think it may be $35 a yr, but still worth it. You get the Roundell which is a cool magazine, and you are able to take part in BMWCCA events, including Auto-X and Track days.

It's all about connections. With FS on this board, one could save $100's on parts, and upgrades, like used wheels, parts off parts cars, etc. And you don't have to buy from the stealership for parts, like eap4parts or whatever have awesome deals on maintence items.

My uncle is a big BMW lover and he has friends who can help me out if need be. He also knows a suspension guy who is really experienced with BMWs, and other people who can point me in the right direction.

One example is when my ABS speed sensor was found out to be lost (PO said it was damaged, lost during auto-X) Dealer price was like $150+, online was $120-130 shipped. I got an used off of another member here for $30 shipped!!

One other thing to consider is where you live. I fyou live in a larger city that has a lot of independant BMW shops then it can be as reasonable to maintain a BMW as any other car. If you live in Western Kansas then finding someone that can fix it and getting parts will be more difficult.

I'm on my 4th BMW and about to buy my 5th. I've also had 5 or 6 Hondas and a couple of Mazdas. The BMW will put a smile on my face when I'm in a bad mood, none of the others have ever done that.

I'm sophomore in college. I live in Michigan but I go to school in South Carolina. I live on campus and have a job on campus at school so I don't need to absolutely depend on a car to get me around.

Does anyone think it crazy of me to want to drive a BMW 800+ miles to get to school in the first place?

Absolutely not. I drove my '84 318 to SanFrancisco from Portland and back just for a weekend. The drive up Highway 1 was more fun than the weekend!

My wife and I flew to Reno from Houston and bought my car and then drove it 2476 miles home. It has 150k miles on it. Just check it out before the trip, get you a bentley manual and carry some tools (if you know how to use them ;) )

Luckily I am mechanically-inclined and I will be able to fix something should anything go wrong on the trip down there. Now, the only problem is actually buying the car...
