If you're worried about the motronic version, just get a new ecu and replace any sensor required by the 1.3 - am I missing something here? You're talking about dropping a $650 engine into a car and it would cost you $45 for a 1.3 ecu on ebay. Go for the one with some confidence, the other deal sounds too shady.

As for smog tests, just put a new sticker from your current engine on the m30. I don't see why it wouldn't pass (although they base the test on the engine's displacement, which means you'd be putting out more than a 2.5l). However, if the engine is running well, it will likely pass anyway.

Hmmm - never knew that ecu's were so cheap. I got quoted $335 for a ecu and harness from jim at autobahn...Yea, what a waste of time gettng that quote was.

Hopefully Joe and I can work out a deal that makes sence...

You can find used ecu's on ebay for under $100 at the least.
Before you buy a harness, supposedly the 325i 1.3 motronic engine harness can be used with the B35 ecu, sensor and alll. I plan on using an 86 325e engine harness with my Motonic B33. I can send you the link to where on e30.de a guy used the 325i harness.

Go with the lower mileage one that you know the history of and have people that can vouch for its condition.

By the way, keep me posted on this, I'm gonna be doing this swap over the winter as I can get my hands on an m30 really cheap.
