    PayPal email scam?

Watch the email address that your PayPal payments go to, I got something today that looks to be a scam.

I got an email in my inbox saying that "a new email address has been added to your account", and it was some bogus email address "laptopseller@yahoo.com".

After that, it said "If you did not authorize this change or if you need assistance with your account, please contact PayPal customer service at:"

Transfer money online in seconds with PayPal money transfer. All you need is an email address.

So I go to that link, and it just takes me to this page that says I have been randomly selected for some security measure thing and asks me to verify my identity. All it gives me are a bunch of boxes for my credit card number, the issuing bank, the expiration date, and the 3 digit number on the back. It doesn't say to use the specific card I opened the account with, or anything. It just has these text boxes asking for this info. But if I click on that link here, it takes me to the email promt to send an email to PayPal.

So I close the email and log into my PayPal account. It takes me right into my account, no asking me to verify anything, no security measure bulletins. I go into my profile to check the email addresses, and there are no new ones added.

Does this sound like a scam to gather credit card info to anyone else?

You know, I really hope that you forgot to add in some sarcastic emoticon or something.

This scam has been going around for a little while. The test is to do just what you did, log into the paypal directly. The fake sites are not https://www.paypal.com .. it will have some bogus stuff in the URL.

Yeah, I just tried to click on the link in my email again, to verify what you said about the URL being wierd, and now it takes me to some expired Geocities URL.

never, ever, never, ever, never ,ever click on a link in a bank, paypal, etc. email. If it is requesting you to click the link to make changes then close the email, open your browser, and go directly to the site i.e. www.paypal.com. Login directly on the site and if it istill asking you to make some changes then fine.

It is VERY easy to spoof web addresses in emails. You click it and think you are going to the correct site but have really been re-directed somewhere else.

the guy that puts on our local Eurofest Nashville car show
event got burned--just a couple of days before the show...

once he realized that he had been spoofed, he had to drop
EVERYTHING that he was doing in preparation for the show
and cancel credit cards and bank accounts and all kinds of
                            stuff...it sucked...

I got an email back from PayPal today, this is what it said.

                              "Dear Josh Anderson,

                              Thank you for contacting PayPal.

I have reviewed your account and see that this email address has not
been added to your Profile. The email you have received is Spam and
does not affect your PayPal account. Thank you for reporting this issue
to us, as it has been determined to be an email fraud scam that has
                              affected thousands of PayPal users.

Spam, including unsolicited commercial email, unsolicited bulk email,
mass email, and junk email, is a message that advertises goods or
services that you send to someone without their prior consent or in the
absence of a previous relationship. In one respect, spam is the
electronic equivalent of the junk mail you receive in your postal
                              mailbox every day."
