[OOMPH!]

I am in the market for a used bike, I was thinking of a Suzuki GSXR 600 or 750 1997-2000. Has anyone had any experience with Suzuki bikes? Comments and suggestions appreciated.

this your first bike? if so, dont go anything bigger than 600, especially if it's a newer bike... bikes these days are making alot more power than they used to... today's 600's are putting out equivilant power of the liter bikes of 5 years ago

gixxers are awesome track bikes... which means they're not exactly comfortable on the street.

i think just about everyone here knows i have an '00 zx-6r and FUCKING LOVE IT TO DEATH... i've only had it 8 weeks & have almost doubled the milage it had on it when i got her

www.sportbikes.net is a good place to check out - there's a pretty informative "newbie corner" section in the forums

the only piece of advice i'll give to someone who's getting into motorcycling that i actually PREY that they follow.... take the MSF course - http://www.msf-usa.org/ - i haven't heard a SINGLE PERSON give any good reason why NOT to take it!!!

I'll double you up on the MSF course. It's a no brainer for FNG's and take the MSF II the next year to remind yourself how much you have forgotten.

Safety and your Brain keep you from getting killed. Bikes=Fun but use common sense.

Yeah I'm ahead of you guys Safety definitely first, Pennsylvania has a free safety course, so I signed up for it and start in August. Thanks for the websites Pete......

Don't get a bike that's TOO BIG! I have an old beat up Yamaha Maxim 750 (~'82), and even that thing is too fast for new riders. One of my friends layed it out for his second time the other day!
(Which brings up another good point: Don't let your numbskull friends who don't even have motorcycle endorsements ride your bike...even if it's *just around the block, man*)

I really like older Honda Interceptors (500-750), and they are dirt cheap these days.

a mid-late 90's gixxer 6 is just fine to learn on, just don't go bigger than 600., and remember - it only goes as fast as you twist your wrist... if you use your head, don't act like a fucking moron & take the MSF course you'll be fine

just know that you WILL drop it... so get something that won't break the bank or your heart if you lay it down... and of course wear all your gear (i'm in the process of shopping for a 2-piece race suit... probably gonna get this 8) )

Fraser, I bought a 1984 Honda Inceptor 750 V-tiwin to learn on before I made this thread. The bike is in mint condition, hopefully it stays that way because I want to sell it after I'm done with it.

i'll get the front end up a little bit, but no burnouts or anything like that... i ride my bike the way it was meant to be ridden... on two wheels (99% of the time ;) ) through the twisties

if you get a suzuki, i'd recommend a katana for a first bike. gixxer is a bit much IMO, even in a 600. they are pretty damn quick, and you can hurt yourself quite easily
