Garage/ Barn Find (need some info/ help/ what is it worth)

So, I found this in a garage and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. It's an M (according to the guy and the few bits and pieces I've found on the WWW). It has the 2nd generation M88 engine. It's a car that was grey marketed in from Germany in the '90's. Apparently, all the history is known on the car and it's a true non-cat M car. That being said, it's been sitting in a garage/ shed for the past few years.. The guy is thinking about selling it cheep (NO, I won't say how much).

    A) Does anyone know of a decent site that can explain these cars a little more (I've just found bits and pieces)?

    B) What do these go for in good shape (I can't even find one for sale!)

    C) Is this really just a 635csi without a cat?

Thanks.. Any info would be great before I try and pick this thing up.. If I even should.

(Sorry for the bad pics, it's really stuffed in this shack)

The engine is the real deal for sure.

S38B36= gnarly ass motor. I'd buy it just to have the motor in a semi-light car. I'd say go for it bro. If its a steal then grab it. You could probably make double or triple what you spent on the car just by selling the motor. Hard to find and very nice.

Yeah it's a euro M6. Not like a regular 635csi, but like a US m6. It's an s38 24v motor without a cat, minor little parts differences (I think it has a single row timing chain instead of double, valve cover different, misc gaskets different, but functionally the same). 635's are m30's with 12 valves.

A friend of mine just bought an 85 euro m6 about 6 months ago for about 15k on ebay. it had 45k miles on it and was in great shape but didn't have the best pictures, and he seemed to think that he could flip it for more money whenever he wanted if he cleaned it up and advertised it better, and he knows the market a lot better than I do.

Anyhow they are sick cars that's for sure. Totally different character than my 635 and a lot of fun. By the way those pretty RS looking wheels are metric and 4 new tires for them will run you 2 stacks and suck, so look into getting some regular wheels for it as I'm sure those TRX's are in rough shape sitting for several years.

Anyways BUY IT, and if you dont I'll offer a finders fee to hook me up with i t :)

            S38, er, what??

That's an M88/3. Note the roundel inscribed on the valve cover. M88's have the inscribed roundel and either "M Power" (as in your car) or "BMW M Power".

The S38 simply reads "BMW M Power".

            Lovely barn find though.

^^ Yeah, the motor is definatly the M88 with 2 timing chains (so I'm guessing most gaskets/ parts from an s38 would work). I found this on wiki..

The tires are shreded on the left side of the car, it would have to be towed out of the garage or wheels changed out all around. Still getting a feel if I want to take it on..

If its wrecked or seized the best thing would be to clean her up and resell minus the wheels .

Just so you know though .....its like $12k-$15k for a full rebuild on one of those engines .
That might influence your decision on keeping it .

Best site for info would be mye28.com .

I'm sort of in the same situation right now with a semi wrecked e28 M5 right now .
Car has ft end damage but also has lots of decent mods including Euro spec engine so its tempting wether to buy/sell or part .

Agreed about the MyE28 bit. My brother is a member of that site and has gained loads of information regarding the M88/S38 motors.

If you do decide do have the engine rebuilt, let me know. My father had his S38 in his E34 M5 rebuilt for the low side of Teaguer's guesstimate by a guy named Henry Lawrence at a place called Powerplant Racing. Do some Googling, you will find that he is one of the most well-versed people in regards to the S38 and BMW V12 series (M70, M73, and S70).

Thanks!! That's the post I'm looking for. I believe the engine is in good shape. I think it was started last year and cared for by an ATL BMW legend Bobby Thrash (at least I've heard). It might have issues of course due to the last year or so just sitting.

The guy is getting rid of it pretty cheap; however it’s still a price I would have to get a loan for. So, I’m pretty cautious right now.

I'm still curious as to how much these run for in good shape. If I were to pick it, I would be a 'flip' situation... I would sell it for money for an e30 M3 (or find someone to trade for it). Again, depending on what it's worth. Since the M88 is pretty freakin' rare and it is the original Euro M, I'm thinking it's worth a decent amount, I just can't find any proof...

PS.. I have been looking on mye28 for the last few days and really haven't come up with to much on this car. Thanks for the suggestion though!
