Question for BMW Tech's (IE GT1)

I am looking into picking up a GT1/T30 Thinkpad combo do allow me to reprogram ECU's on the later cars (IE DME/EWS programming).

Anything I should beware of before I go looking for one? I am only considering the newer versions which are running for around 2K-3K these days. Which after working on a few cars would easily become a great edition to my tools stock.

i've seen a lot of gt1 stuff on ebay, aka a diag head, and software to run on a pc. i've never used that type of set up. i will say that BMW is going to a new Diagnostics system, ISIS. And there might be an uprising of old GT1s for sale. The hard part will be getting the new software and such.

Sorry I'm not much help, I've just always used the dealers stuff.

The trouble with these are that it runs as a "virtual machine" on the PC, lot of glitches and DIS can get very slow.

I have been working with one for a bit now and think it sucks.

(BTW GT1 is now pretty much obsolete just like the old MoDic)

how is the gt1 obsolete? what else are you using to diagnose cars? you work at an independent or dealer?

i honestly dont know any other programs/software/tools to diagnose other than the real deal DIS software or an after market PC setup.

Well correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as I work on supported vehicles I'm in the clear.

                I don't plan on touching an E92 M3 anytime soon, but E46's, E39's etc

                  True.

We are pretty much stuck with GT1 and PC virtual GT1/SSS/DIS in the independent world...

The new system is ISIS and as usual it's just beyond our grasp.

The problem... (if history is any indicator) old parts superseded to revised replacement parts will need to be encoded to the old system...and it can't be done without ISIS.

I dont know if ISIS will support older vehicles, e36's, e39's and that sort. In the past we had to keep an old DIS machine loaded with an older software level for the older cars. i personally cant wait for ISIS as I think it will be a good thing. Damn GT1's are too slow with the new cars.

I know what you mean...From your end, but out here in the wind it makes things difficult.

I don't know if you were around in the mid 90's but a service action on the first ms43s instituted by BMW rendered them incommunicado to us as independents...intentionally.

That is life, I know it's BMW's job to corner as much of the market as possible, I was part of that (I worked for AG and NA from '81 or so to '91).

Our parts dealer has been talking about GT1s a lot lately, I guess he suddenly can source them a lot easier now that ISIS is taking over...?

I really dont understand what you mean about the GT1 being slow on the newer cars??? reading anything out of a e36 is lunch time around here. As long as we are running the opps head on anything "newer" it isnt too bad.
do any of you have a up and running ISIS over there? my "work partner" was at the ISIS info course here a few weeks ago and said it is 10x slower and nothing but problems in the school house here! they have been playing with that f**kin pile of crap in the rear room by us for months already and all it does is mess up the whole network by us.

guess that doesnt really help CRIV.
but from what I am aware, it will work just fine on anything up until last year for you. over here though, we do all the programming on a different station- has nothing to do with the GT1- just the head.
