Burnt smell when A/C is on

Who has has this happen to them before? At first I thought it might be refridgerant, but I didnt smell it coming out of the vents. When i got close to the HVAC panel i smell it there, has this happened to anyone? nothing came up on a search, i was thinking maybe it was the A/C switch? anyone with any onfo?

    thanks

Did it smell like a turd caught on fire? Yes?

Yea, it's your belt. It wore out. $10 and a wrench and you are good.

it wasnt a belt smell, the a/c actually works great, it actually smelled like a couple of wires melting

had a problem and found someone with similiar prob...dont know if this is whats wrong with you.

But a/c on..all of a sudden burnt smell and smoke comes out of dash. Smell was wires melting....after replacing blower problem was gone. I have heard some just cleaned their blower fans and it took care of problem...

Not sure if thats whats wrong with you

i only have the smell when the a/c is on, i was kinda thinking a refridgreant leak but the a/c still works great and the smell is not coming from the vents.

                      Update:

Well, Its definitely an electrical problem and the smell was from some melting wires. Today the smell sort of subsided, all was good, but then out of no where, I smelled it again and I looked down and there was smoke coming from th HVAC unit. Ill be pulling out the HVAC to inpect it and the blower motor.

                      Thanks to all who posted,

                          AC no worky

Mine did the same thing a few years ago and it wasn't until last fall I took the dash apart and saw the partially melted wires. Based on something I read on here I wired them together and nothing changed. So now I either didn't fix that problem or the system has lost its freon from sitting for so long. Oh and it is around 100 degrees today in my black on black '87 325is. Good times. Any advice on what to check first or next? Much appreciated.

                            Check your freon.
                            Does your compressor kick on?
                            Hows the dryer?
                            That should keep you busy.
                            Yours truly,
