I made a booth...

I am scrambling to get my car done so I can take it to the picnic. It's a slow process though because I am quite busy with school, work and I just can't pass up golfing when the weather is nice.

Long story short, I am painting my car in my garage. Well, my good friend will be doing the painting and I'll be spraying the primer. If I were to paint it, it'd probably run all over the place. My friend Pat has painted his old F150 and a friend's 30000GT, so I've got much more confidence with him spraying. I have constructed a makeshift booth out of 3/4" PVC and 3MIL plastic sheeting. It has 3 filters that will pull air from inside my house and there will be two or three box fans pushing air out in to the neighborhood. We'll be priming my bumpers, skirts, lip and spoiler tomorrow to see how it works out. If it goes well, we'll shoot the car too and get to blocking.

I know it's kind of ghetto, but I think it'll work out pretty well. I've got my suit on, so flame away.

I've made similar set ups. you will prob need more positive airflow (stronger fans, just don't buy the cheap ones and spring for the $40 and up ones). put HEPA a/c filters on the intake side of the fans. you will also want to go to a heavier plastic. i used "blue tarps" and overlapped them with duct tape on both sides. if you seal it well you can produce some good results. wear a respirator too!

Yeah, I tried it quickly with a single box fan, and I could tell that it definitely wasn't enough. I'll probably get a couple more, or spring for some better ones. And you are right, I should have used heavier plastic. I cleaned the floor extremely well before laying the shit down, but still after walking on it I can see tiny pin holes from some shit on the other side. I think I'll have to lay cardboard on the floor or something.

And that's a definite yes on the respirator. My friend who is spraying has a couple so I don't have to buy one.

Make sure to CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN the car up, the cleaner the car (everywhere) the less chance of dust to get into your paint. wetting down the floor sometimes works well. Hope to see you at the picnic!

Do you mean that I will want positive pressure in the booth? Like I should blow air in instead of pushing it out?

Yeah, I was kind of lax about cleaning at first, but my my friend keeps telling me how important it is to have it clean. What do you recommend to wipe the car down with prior to spraying?

I hope I can get this thing done and assembled in time to make it.


It will be getting the stock schwarz paint.

I hate to keep posting, but what kind of paint do you guys recommend I get? I will need to buy it very soon.

I know dupont makes a solvent called final clean and I have used it TONS, I am sure whatever paint brand you are using has a similar product. It is to get the last grim, dust, grease etc off the surface. wash the underside down, wheel wells, engine bay etc etc to make sure you don't have clumps of dirt and dust lingering around.


Edit: I use Dupont Chromasystem base/clear at the body shop I work at and I like it. I've had it on my grey car for the last two years with no complaints that weren't 100% my fault. Ask your painter friend what he likes. Also depends on what the body shop dealer in your area carries.

I spent last night wiping down all of the creases under the trunk lid, behind the doors and around the engine bay. They are all pretty damn clean. I'll get to it right after class tomorrow and get the engine bay and the rest of it clean. Would it be a bad to use a power washer on a low setting on the underside of the car?

To have a crossdraft booth you have to have enough air coming in and being sucked out to create a decent amount of airflow.

From my college spray booth I couldn't remember really feeling a big draft but if you look at your over spray's direction it should be headed towards some what to your exhaust fans/filters.
