that seems really excessive- the plastic booth.-- but in painting, excessive is not a bad thing in keeping it clean and dust free
in my buddies booth, yes, there is a sensor in the booth and it fills the room with a positive pressure- esp. if a door is open a but( it keeps anything from being sucked in) if the door is open too long you really have to use your back to close the door.

I have sprayed in my car port before, kinda sux at night when the bugs were coming out, but if you use a 2 stage, you can polish out about 90% of anything that lands in the paint.
pushing air across the room isnt a great idea, it will DEFINITALY push any crap directly on the paint surface. you want it to suck from the bottom to pull everything out.

like Issac said, you should really wet everything down to keep the dust that is in there on the ground.

As far as paint goes, are they selling anything other than the waterbased colors over there still? in europe its against the law to spray with old skool conv. thinner based paints- but a ton easier to work with in a "garage atmosphere" water based need alot more drying time.

You mean good ole solvent based paints like Deltron etc? Of course! They're much more expensive these days from what I remember the prices being, but then again, gas is $4/gallon.

I don't even think water based paints have REALLY made inroads into the US market because of the additional equipment required for curing the paint quicker.

actually you want air flow, just not an excessive amount. The idea is where the air is coming from is being filtered.

There are different configurations of spray booths. I don't understand how he can suck air from the bottom with the garage he has to work with.

I live in california where they have tougher pollution laws. Solvent based paint is becoming illegal in most rural areas and some city centers by 2009. I've sampled a lot of companies new water based and its pretty cool to work with :)

pretty slick, I think Im going to line my garage floor and wall the same way....when the time comes. (maybe in the next month here) Problem is flying insects !!!!! They always seem to be attracted to the paint !!!

Seems like with all the money you've spent setting up the tent and buying all of the products and the time etc.. you could prep the car yourself and just have it ready to be painted. Then drop it off at a shop and have they spray it and thats it for cheaper?

I think I paid like 600 for a 2 stage professional paint job. He just sprayed over whatever work I had done before hand. I had to wet sand some drips out of the clear coat but whatever.

$600?? If I were to have taken it to MAACO, it would have been that much... I did get a few quotes, and the least expensive was around $2000. Most body shops don't want to spray something and have their "name on it" unless they do the prep work.

But I really don't know how this will turn out. It might end up looking like shit and then you will have been right I guess. Still, what's the fun in having someone do it when I can do it in my garage?

Holy shit, what a day. I got done with class at 12 today, came home and got to work. Finished cleaning, taping and sealing the booth and then got to spraying. We finished spraying at about ten, and just finished cleaning up and all of that. It went on well, and from the looks of things, we did a pretty good job of the body work.

Also, I have to say that I am very surprised at how well one fan worked. It was definitely under a good amount of negative pressure, I could feel a slight draft and I had the door from the garage to the house wide open and my room mate didn't catch a single whiff of anything. I'll add another fan when the time comes for paint though.

Now it's time for work and homework that I put off all day.
