Are the quarter panels from an 86 e30 different from a 91e30

The quarter panel on my brothers car has some rot. So he was gonna cut his rear quater panel out, and put another back in. He found an 86 e30 for cheap but was unsure if the quarter panels were slightly different.
I thought they might be because 87's quarter panels are different right? thanks

Yes, they are different.

E30's made before 88 had higher rear wheel arches, post-88 cars had lower ones.

They will fit, but he will have higher wheel arches in the back..
