why bother? They are cheap. I don't trust any headbolt 15 years old. After you go through the whole teardown process you really don't want to do it all over because you gambled on a 15year old bolt do you?
-Oh kay... love the mix of answers... They really aren't that "cheap", the only place I can find them in-town is the dealership, they want about $160 for all 10. I'm not footing the bill, the car's owner is anyway ;)
-Just making sure they are not torque-to-yield. It seems that they are TECHNICLY reuseable (unlike BMW bolts), but its just a really good idea to replace them.
Not knowing any better my friend and I reused the head bolts on his car and one of the bolt heads snapped clean off at the top and destroyed the cam and a couple of lifters. It might have not been so drastic had the bolt snapped in the middle then it would not have been able to travel far enough to reek havoc under the valve cover. I'll know next time when they say, "are you SURE that you don't need new head bolts?"
"See, we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."
