Does anyone want to buy a cammed/chipped '93 M42 with about 40k miles on it?
This would just about finish my project funding.
"See, we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."
I've got 10 bucks that says Matt's swap never happens.

I thought you wanted an m50 last week. Before that wasnt it an s50?
I wanted an M50 until I came upon the LS1 thread, and realized how easy and realistic the swap would be, and how much cheaper power was...

No offense, but you're gonna have to do a lot more to your little 318 or else that ls1 will tear your car apart. The small case rear diff will get torn to shreds for one, and you'll have to reinforce every area possible.
it wouldnt be cheap or easy, it never is. Wiring will be a hassle, as with any marque changing swaps, motor and tranny mounts would need to be fabbed, cooling dealt with, driveshaft would need to be modified probably, and all that is just getting the motor working, not counting the upgrading you'd have to do to the rest of the car, brakes, suspension, body mods to fit rubber, etc.
I would however, be worth the expense to have corvette idle and oomph in a sub 3k lb car
It is neither easy nor cheap, but it could easily be done in far less time than I have spent on it. I have moved, had my brother's stuff filling my work shop with storage, been crushed at work and so on. As much as I love the car, it is not my #1 priority.
The biggest thing about this project that is a bitch is the oil pan. You either have to go Pontiac GTO front sump or dry sump. The other thing is all of the other upgrades to handle the power.
Do what you like, but it is much easier to stick one of these motors in an e36 and you would be more likely to get your money out of it if you ever decided to sell.
I am not so sure I wouldn't go this route if I had it all to do over.
when it comes to non-bmw swaps, the LS1, 1JZ, and SR20 come to mind. all of which seem like they would be fantastic swaps as they are all incredible motors. although when it comes to swapping non-bmw parts into a bmw... you get trouble. as rob mentioned earlier, oil pan, driveshaft, wireing, brake booster, diff, mounting, etc. though these swaps seem acheiveable, it seems that you are just going to get yourself into a headache situation. i personally would never swap anything other than a bmw motor into my e30. not because i dont want to disgrace the name or something, but becuase bmw makes strong enough motors to handle any kind of driving i want to do. so unless i was gona drop a few thousand into a track only e30, i would stick to bmw.
Sounds like loads of fun, 1st Car 73 Chevy Nova 350 375hp in a 3500lb car, would like to see how straight the car is after you drive it hard for a while, bet it twists the shit out of the whole car, I would think a cage for reinforcement will be required.!..
for the time and money this project will take you, I'd much rather get an OBDI 3.0L i-6 out of the 95 M3 with the tranny. The main reason for this is you have a 318 and an american V8 will be a drastic change on your car from the 1.8L 4cyl. That M3 motor will make your car a lot more powerful with it stock let alone if you modded it. I am a strong believer also that BMW's should be all BMW, poaching parts for your car from another car company is a typical ricer tradition and I do not appove. sure it will be fast, but you think it'll really stay on the road with that much power in such a light car? Would it really be a cool idea to take a chevy lumina and drop a high performance BMW motor in it? The answers no
