New E30 owner....need advice and hopefully a parts list for an '84 318i

    Hello All –

New to R3vlimited, but I’ve been lurking for a couple of months.

    I’ve owned numerous BMW’s over the past decade…. a 1998 528i, a 2003 z4 2.5, a 1999 740il, and currently a 2002 325xi as well as my latest acquisition a 1984 Hennarot 318i….with somewhere just north of 90,000 miles on it (although the odometer has stopped working).

I’d wanted an e30 since high school, when a good friend had one as a daily driver. At the time I was pushing a 1987 Hyundai Excel, so obviously I could not afford one. Fast forward 13 years and the world has been kind enough to allow me to drive some nicer cars and now a big enough garage to store/work on “projects” in.

    Anyway, on to the questions/description:

    1) My 318i is in poor shape….I’ve qualified it as a “restoration” candidate (paint is very faded and the cars functional values are questionable). It does run, but very rough on start-up….but smoothens out after 5 minutes or so. My assumption is that it at least needs a “new” idle control valve and idle control module (I have two sets of valves and module off of ebay that I will test).

    2) The previous owner told me that the car needs a new catalytic converter as well. I’m thinking I will replace the oxygen sensor(s) a well, since those may have caused the cat failure. Actually I might as well replace the entire exhaust system. Does anyone make an inexpensive header for the e30 variant of the m10 motor?

    3) I’m also thinking the ignition system needs to be revamped. I may just change out the plugs, wires, distributor and rotor, but does anyone have any advice concerning this system? Can I replace it with something better?

    4) The cooling system needs to be entirely overhauled as it does currently overheat after about 10 minutes of running. I’m contemplating ordering an OEM spec radiator, but I wonder if there are any universal-style aluminum designs out there that would fit the opening? I’ll likely measure the stock radiator and see if I can find something suitable. Also, what is the difference between automatic and manual spec radiators? I will be replacing the clutch driven fan with a SPAL type electric fan as well. I received a new waterpump for it yesterday and it apparently received a new thermostat recently.

    5) It is…unfortunately… an automatic transmission car. I must swap this thing with a manual tranny. Does anyone have a parts list for this conversion on an early 318i? I know this stuff has been discussed ad-nauseum before, but I’m just not sure how to go about researching exactly what I need for this conversion.

I do intend on keeping the car an M10, but I might entertain the idea of some day turbocharging it.

Thankfully I do not need to press the car into service, but I will begin working on the car in the coming weeks (hopefully with a build-up thread…to chronicle the process). For the time being, I will be focusing on completing some upgrades on me e46…J

Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Albo

Congratulations on your acquisition, Albo...but I have to ask-what is your primary purpose/focus for this car? What lies in its future?

I myself have a very soft spot for E30's...in fact, I just picked up a '87 325 as a new 'project' car to mess with for no reason at all. I have already spent almost $4k in parts alone getting it mechanically sound again (I replace EVERYTHING!) and in the end I still only have an undesirable, diving board eta engined E30 that isn't worth anything to most people.

What am I getting at? If you want a project to build up, I would at least find a later model E30 shell-preferably a 6 cylinder model that has larger axles, differential, larger struts, and rear disc brakes already installed. For asthetic reasons, finding an '88-up model with the updated valences already in place is also nice. A diving board car can look nice, but in the end I am finding myself wishing I had taken the time to find a later model car. Also, find one with a manual-not having to source a transmission plus taking extra time to install the manual pedal box and other associated hydraulics is a nice bonus.

Not trying to be Debbie Downer on this, but as someone that is doing something similar I think it is good advice to listen to. But let me know what your future plans are and we can go from there.

      Welcome!

With that said, take a look at my thread as I have exactly the same car but mine is a 5spd.

It will take a lot of $ and hours so you might want to decide exactly what you are trying to achieve with it at the end. I would of course do the basic (hoses, belts, oil, coolant, ignition, brakes) and everything else is up to you. These cars are very easy to work on if you don't know that already :)

If I was goign to do it all over again, I would pick an 88+ car to begin with.

      Good luck!

Thanks to both of you Eric and Jean. I was actually looking for a 325es or a later 318is (and ready to go look at one for sale in the San Diego area)...when this one popped up.

I was able to trade some left over parts from my former E38 for this car from a fellow BimmerBoard member. To tell you the truth...it was an impulse buy for three reasons: 1) I have always loved DB cars 2) The Hennarot paint has always spoken to me (somuch so that I have in the past thought about repaintin gmy Orient Blue E46 that very color) and 3) I wanted something relatively unique.

If nothing else...the M10 engine is that. I may turn this car into my train station car as time goes on. Presently I have a 130 mile daily commute (via train mostly), that requires a car on each end. I would love to make both of those 3ers (instead of the old Toyota I use as a beater now).

At least that's how i'd like to start with it. I ordered up most of the cooling system yesterday from Autohausaz.com and I'll likely spend some time on the toilet with my summitracing catalog in an effort to find a nice aluminmu down-flow radiator to replace the craptastic behr original. I may just have my local radiator guy fab one up for me.

Much is planned for the car already, but i don't knwo when or how it's all going to come to fruition. I will update this thread though with the progress. Including a cameo from my e46 and my MKv Rabbit :-)

This is definitely a crime of passion (as the Mrs. said after seeing the faded paint)..
