    Building a new gaming rig.

So the time has come to build up a new system. The one I have right now is too slow for the games I like to play.

    Right now I have:

    2GHz P4, 512DDR, GeForceTi4200

Here is what I have picked out for building my new system, looking for some feedback as far as what you guys think?

    Intel Pentium 4/ 3.4C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512K L2 Cache, HT Technology
    SOYO "SY-P4I875P DRAGON 2 v1.0" i875P Chipset Motherboard
    1GB DDR PC-3200
    nVIDIA GeForce 6800, 128MB GDDR, 8X AGP
    Sound Blaster Audigy2ZS (already have)
    Dual layer DVD-R/RW - CD-R/RW drive
120GB Western Digital HD (Operating system, program files)
    200GB Western Digital HD (L337 H4X0R F1L3Z)

Not totally sure what case I will put it all in ATM, but I know I want a simple black mid-tower case, no acylic windows or 10,000 fans. Needs to be quiet.

Dual layer is the newer standard. Most DVD-R drives are single layer 4.7GB. Dual layer supports 2 layers instead of 1.

Gonna spend about $1400 or so.

You sound like a prime candidate for water cooling.

Ever AMD processor I have ever dealt with has been shit and given me nothing but problems. I refuse to buy one again.

I don't like ATi, I will always use nVidia cards.

if you want a plain black case get a lian-li. plain and simple.

personally i would have gone with an athlon 64 or 64-fx

I agree, intel is playing catchup at this point, The Prescott P4's (the one jordan wants) are not that good in terms of raw power, AMD64 is the only way to go at this point, with an Abit motherboard it would be a very powerful machine.

Videocards, I refuse to ever purchase an nvidia card again, terrible filtering practices, overall subpar fsaa performance (although they finally fixed that) and just awful buisness practices ( the way its meant to be played, that nonesense)

the X800 is a fantastic card, and offers higher rendering performance/visuals over the nvidia counterpart, but whatever you wanna go with.

Also don't go with SOYO, they are a lower tier mainboard manufacturer and don't have as high of a quality as Abit or MSI.

                          I would go with ABIT

I've had three AMD's in various setup's over the years and have NEVER had a failure or glitch. They do produce a shitload of heat, but my case runs three fans that are isolated with o-rings on the mounting points.

I'm running an AMD with SOYO dragon board and it works great. You're right about them running hot, I've got 4 fans and on some really hot days the computer will automatically restart so that it can cool down.
