Well the OBC calculates how far the gas in your tank should get you according to your current fuel economy. Right when you fill up, it takes a little bit for the OBC to get the calculation. It usually keeps climbing and then slows and starts to come down after you start putting miles on the tank. Its pretty accurate but obviously it will adjust itself to your driving. If you have 60 miles left on the tank, you could probably get 40 miles on it safely without running out of gas. However if you have a heavy foot, the OBC changes its input and starts to lower the miles left pretty quickly. So if you are an economic driver, the range indicator is pretty accurate. If you are hard on the gas pedal all the time, I definitely wouldn't test how far the range meter says your fuel with get you.

Unfortunately my mileage counter broke (as usual, my E30 M3 as well) and my fuel gauge so eratic so I have to rely on the OBC. I am a light footer (not in the M3) on this 325ic.

Well I would say just trust in your OBC and it shouldn't let you down. Its never let me down. The gas light usually turns on at about 35-40 miles left on the tank which is pretty accurate because the light should turn on when you have about a gallon and a half left in your tank. 25mpg x 1.5= ~35

Just keep it light on the pedal and it should be very accurate.

I trust it. My cluster is now frozen in time mileage wise, so I rely on it. I ran it down to "----" once which is below 0 miles left. Sure as shit, I ran out of gas. My needle is not accurate though.

Sound good. I rarely let it run dry (potential pump damage). What about MPG info? My read 28.5MPG on highway and 23.5MPG in city
