Guibo - How do you know if you need a new one?

I know this is a common topic, but I've searched and haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I'm just curious what the car does (1991 318is in my case) to make you think 'I need a new guibo.'

Is there something I can check on the driveshaft? Will it have play in it or?

    Thanks a million!

    Adam

Well you could definitely do a visual inspection—if it looks all cracked and worn, then it needs to be replaced. I don't know what other kinds of signs to look for besides it generally looking worn—perhaps someone more knowledgeable about guibos could let us know.

I look at it every once in a while. But on my other car I heard it, thing was shredding and you can hear it slap against the underbody.

Clunking, vibrations from the driveline, etc.

Had all of the above from my car, looked under tonight and the guibo looked like someone had crammed it through a shredder.

Look at it, if there are any symptoms prior to it blowing apart you were lucky.

Look for any signs of cracks, oil soaking or fraying cord if there are any of these replace it.

Note: on the disk there arrows (or should be I've seen some off brand ones without) these are to be indexed pointing to an ear on the flanges. If incorrect the disk will fail rapidly.
