    Anyone with a late model "i" with a z4 3.0 lever?.

any of you have a 1990 (or eqivilant) "i" and have the z4 3.0 shifter? I just ordered all the parts (birthday present for myself) and I was wondering if you had to bend the selector rod? Anyone have any tips for installation? thanks guys,

i didn't bend anything, i removed the balancer. no ill effects what so ever, just make sure you have thread lock on the flex plate bolts. some pointers

    1. replace selector shaft seal if you can
    2. the more shifter parts you replace the tighter it will be
    3. make sure you have a good shift knob that won't fall off, as the effort of the shift increases you have to use more force and i tend to pull off my knob (only cause some of the clips are broken)
    4. to remove the balancer, remove the flex plate and all the bolts, then pound out the studs (make sure you have a nut on the end.) remove balancer and pount back in studs.

If you need some advice Dan, just PM. My car is still up on jacks, so if you were in the area, I could spend 5 minutes with you under the car pointing everything out.

It seems confusing, but you will understand it when you see it. The mechanism is pretty simple. Just put everything back where it was before disassembly and use your new parts in place of the old parts.

I had to bend the selector rod on my 1990 325i. I think this is easier than removing the harmonic balance ring from the driveshaft. The rod is hollow and is not that tough to bend. Since I had no vise nor a good place to mount one, I just took my selector rod + 3 sockets + some packing tape down to Lowe's and used the bigass vise on display in their hardware dept. Just be careful not to bend the rod too much.
