Anyone know much about 90's Ford engines?

My wife just got a '97 Ford Windstar (for her daycare, she needed something with lots of seats for all the kiddies). It's the V6 model, and the "CHECK ENGINE" light has been coming on, and then going to flashing. I looked it up in the manual, and it says a flashing check engine light may be associated with a misfire. Well, when the light starts flashing, the engine starts to run really strangely, like it's missing a cylinder. It gets very chuggy, and doesn't have much power until you get out of the low end, and then it's pretty much normal. The idle also flucutates a lot in a small range, and you can feel the engine bouncing.

Since I know JACK SHIT about Fords, I was hoping maybe someone here can point me in the right direction of getting it fixed. Do I maybe just need to do the usual plugs/cap/rotor tune-up, or is it something more serious?

PS - Don't fill this thread with a bunch of Ford-flaming bullshit. I'm not interested.

i believe the intake manifold gaskets on these go bad quite often. take a look there too.

Assuming 3.8? A flashing CEL is a misfire. Check the codes and let me know. My bet is that some of the egr ports are clogged. What happens is the ports that are open get all the egr flow causing a misfire on those cylinders. You need to pull the plastic upper intake to check/clean them out.

Awesome, thanks. Turns out my brother in law just got a code reader, so I'll try his.

I agree on the manifold issue, If not that, the other common one is the IAC regarding your issue. I have in the past seen them cause lots of idle speed related issued.

No way. SVT V8 from a Lightning. :D

That'll give the kiddies a little fun and excitement during their day.

Could be a lot of things. I had a 93 Probe GT with a V6 in it and it liked to cook its plug wires. That was a mazda engine though.

Be careful when the cat converters go out, something to the tune of $1400.00.
