Is it wet in that area? Does it smell like gas?It shouldn't be too hard to sort out.

I had a gas leak when my pressure hose was to short after I had to forceably remove and cut a section out. The problem was that the shortened hose would not allow the pump and sending unit to seal all the way. I would have a gas oder when ever I filled up and I would see it leaking out from under the car. I replaced with a section of high pressure 3/8 fuel line and not have had an issue since.

Im not sure if E30s have this but I have the same problem on my honda Accord. There is a hose that is for overflow/vapours. my hose has a crack in it and you can smell fumes and if the tank is full to the max it will start to leak gas. on my Accord and a few other cars Ive seen the hose runs to the gas fill door.
