24 Valve guys in CA: smog test?

Hey guys, some of you know that I am likely to move to California late next year.

I really want to do a 24 valve swap in my car while I still have my shop at my disposal. The plan is a bone stock M50NV, stock ECU, etc.

How hard was it to pass a smog test? Did you have to use the referee system?

    Thanks, guys.
    Luke

Luckily the county I am registered in does not require anual smog tests, only during title transfer. :)

You'll either have to referee it [which shouldn't be that hard] or take it to somebody who doesn't care about visual since it will obviously pass the actual emissions test.

My only question to you, why an M50 non vanos?

+1 AT LEAST spring for the M52. It is a FAR superior engine to the m50 and m50tu.

The ONLY reason I care about the motor is looks: pure RICE!

So, cheap, better mileage, inexpensive...my car is only about cruising, or I would not have a bazillion pounds of stereo crap in the trunk.

If I do move to Cali, I would be in San Diego County, like Fallbrook. I assume they still smog check everything in SD.

I had it done for $200 a month ago. Not many guys here will just let it go anymore, without a nice incentive.

also depends on how smart the smog tech is.

friend of mine has a B13 sentra swapped from GA16DE to SR20DE, but the tech didn't know the difference between the two and it passed sniffer, so no drama.

there's three smog refs in SD, one in north county, central, and south bay. you would most likely hit the ref in vista, off the 78 and nordahl. a couple of local guys have hit him. just make sure all the ducks are in a row and you'll pass.

By ducks in a row he means pretty much everything that came stock from the swap from CEL ( if the donor had one ) all stock equipment on the motor from airbox to the cat converter ( including all vac hoses and such ).

After getting it reffed you can put and carb stickered part you want on it and still be legal.

That's so idiotic that there would even be a problem swapping in a newer, cleaner engine just because it isn't stock. But it figures with all the nut jobs on the left coast.

Hell GRM had a good running Miata pass Emissions in Texas WITHOUT USING A CAT!!!!!!!

I know what you mean, we don't even have yearly inspections here.

                            Same here.

54$ for registration and 120$ a year for insurance ( they think it's a 500$ POS ) I don't need full coverage on it, if I stack it up I'll find another shell ( rust free is pretty easy to find ) paint it and swap all the goodies over.

If you do a real clean swap, just go to he smog place and dont even act like anything is different. Most guys will just see that it says BMW and not even pay any mind to it.
