I believe they have some type of plastic coating on them.

Some people strip the coating off and polish them so they take on a chrome-like appearance.

The plastic tends to "pit" over time, especially on the front bumpers.

I believe BavAuto might sell a kit that allows you to strip the old sealant off, clean up the bumper and recoat it.
