Did you know: E34 M5 Cabrio.

Just spotted this article on another forum. Sorry the text is in a forein language but no worries. Online translators are there for that.

    -Summary-
    -One M5 Cabrio ever built
    - Price would have been £ 50,000
    - BMW had already resevered a spot at the Geneva Auto Show. This
    vert was going into production!
    - One week before the world debut, the cord was pulled on the project
because BMW feard this would negatively affect the 3-Series market
    segment.

Repost, I still think it looks odd though.

I'm wondering: why would BMW care if it "negatively affected the 3-Series market segment"? As long as they are selling a BMW, money's money, right? They would just sell a different car and make money of it. So why not build and sell it?

Why spend the money to produce two cars that satisfy the same market segment?

Yes the market segments OVERLAP, but I would not say they are the SAME.
