Just saw this thread, I'm assuming you're taking Route 66 through OK, sneak down the Cimarron Turnpike to Stillwater and I'll meet you at Eskimo Joes for cheese fries and a cold beer.

You can catch 66 again in OKC, the only cool diner that was on 66 between Tulsa and OKC burned down last year or this year.

Allright, today's lengthy travels have brought me another 600 or so miles, to Springfield, Missouri. Among the things I learned:

Ohio and Indiana are boring and flat.
          Illinois is a bit better.
          Roads in St. Louis suck.
Missouri gives their smaller roads letters instead of numbers. We passed a sign for road UU, and all I could think about for the next 50 miles was (unfortunately) saggy boobs.

Aside from that, nothing especially interesting. We saw lots of gun shops and fireworks shops, and as we got further into Missouri, an increasing number of Jesus-themed billboards.

The car is still behaving properly. It's burning a bit of oil, but come on.. 21-year-old car. Due to some skillful piloting on the part of someone who is not me, one of the mounting points on my euro lip is broken. The lip is now held on by electrical tape and bungee cords, since I'm a dumbass and didn't pack duct tape. I'll fix it when we get to CA.

          Pictars:

Damn! I was just about to.. :(

There were huge crosses all over the place. I think this one was in Indiana, right after a billboard that said "JESUS IS REAL", and before one that said "IF YOU DIED TODAY, WHERE WOULD YOU SPEND ETERNITY?"

These guys get right to the point. (central Missouri)

Parked near the arch. That's some stadium thing in the background... not sure. I think they play sports there.

This thing is large. I got a stern look from the park ranger when I hugged it.

Yes, there are park rangers in the park the arch is in. Yes, it's about a quarter of a square mile in the middle of a city. They even get jeeps, boonie hats, and unnaturally short shorts! Cheeky bastards.

Everything that was not in the previous photos looked like this.

Tomorrow, we head through Oklahoma and end up somewhere near Albuquerque.

Looks like a fun trip. I drove the second half of the one you're doing now when I picked up my cabrio in KC.

Don't forget about the official R3V user map here. It might help you in a jam. Drive safely!

Thanks VacMan! (and everyone else) We're pretty pumped about this trip, and it's gone well so far.

              fuel usage report:

tank 1: 25.9 MPG (uphill through NJ&PA. Apparently I have a case of lead foot)
              tank 2: 28.9 MPG (downhill through PA&Ohio)
tank 3: 27.6 MPG (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois. Worsened by two traffic jams)
tank 4: 26.4 MPG (Illinois, Missouri. Probably burned a sixth of the tank trying to get around in St. Louis)

                  :D

We didn't get to bum around Columbus; too tired. It looked like an allright place, just the scenery outside the cities is... uninspired.

I'm doing this trip next summer and already planning. Good luck and yeah fuck Colombus. Pick up some maps and you can find scenic byways...

...and don't stop in Albuquerque. Its so damn lame. Stop in Santa Fe, its an hour away but I'm not sure if its West, I think it is though.

                        Have fun!

We stepped on it today. We started in Missouri, had lunch in Oklahoma, had dinner in Texas, and now we're in New Mexico. Got a couple cool places to visit tomorrow, so we need all the time we can get.

Western Oklahoma and that part of Texas that sticks up there are absolutely beautiful. I mean... they're pretty flat and _should_ be completely boring, but the emptiness and open-ness of the land is striking in its own way.

Unfortunately, wireless sucks here, so I have to go to the hotel lobby to get any sort of interwebs. Thus, photos will have to wait until tomorrow.

Car's doing fine. It idles a bit low now (higher altitude), but it's manageable. Fuel economy kind of sucked today since the warm and humid air in Oklahoma forced us to turn on the A/C.

I'll check in tomorrow, maybe with photos.

m42technik - Santa Fe is northeast of Alb. I had a good time in Alb last time I was there, so I don't understand why you think it's lame. Care to 'splain?

Also didn't get to chill with z31maniac, because job meetings > people from New Jersey :(

It's all cool, though. No cop incidents yet, either, although a Texas trooper did follow us for a bit.

                              Cool bits of info:
The speed limit on 40 in Texas is different during the day and at night. I have no idea how'd they enforce 'day' and 'night'.
The speed limit on 40 in NM is 75. It was awesome :D
                              My speedometer over-reads by 5mph.
Texas has airborne cow-shit nukes. Seriously, roll up your windows and turn on air recirculation. You'll thank me later.
