misfire, i think?

well took the 84 318i for a long drive today, and every so often whether in idle or driving i get what i think is a misfire. what would cause this? its almost like a little pause in the engine, sounds stupid but best i can explain it. thanks for any help here.

yea, thats the best way to describe a misfire, a "pause"
90% of the time it's ignition-related: plugs, wires, cap, rotor
